How to analyze and visualize social and environmental data?

One of the biggest data challenges these days is synthesizing a huge amount of available data into productive knowledge. The advancement of the data science could help environmental professionals to address this challenge. This practical workshop will focus on analyzing and visualizing social and environmental data.

You will learn methods for analyzing special and tubular data, and practice to turn them into products that will offer powerful insights for decision making and planning. The instructor will introduce you to data types, acquisition, manipulation techniques, and tools. You will also learn to identify and apply appropriate data analysis methods and visualization techniques trying the variety of existing tools by yourself. Later, you will have an opportunity to discuss the application of the learned methods to the area of your interest.

Dr. Anupam Anand (Global Environment Facility)

Dr. Anupam Anand has more than 14 years of combined experience in academia, evaluation, and international development. Currently, he works as an Evaluation Officer at the Global Environment Facility. He uses satellite data, GIS, machine learning, computational social science, field surveys, and other mixed methods to evaluate environmental and developmental interventions. Before GEF, he was an Earth System Scientist at the Global Land Cover Facility (GLCF), University of Maryland. There he worked on developing satellite-based global data products and participated in multiple NASA-funded projects, including field campaigns for NASA's future satellite missions. Anupam has taught courses in GIS, spatial analysis, quantitative methods, ecological labs, GIS, statistical modeling and data visualization in the USA, Europe, and Asia.

Target audience

We seek a diverse group of participants, including practitioners in policy and development, government, non-profits, and international organizations, faculty, postdocs, and graduate students, and anyone with interest in learning about data analysis and visualization techniques and their use on socio-environmental data. The analysis and visualization will leverage freely available R software. Basic knowledge of data literacy, analysis and programming are encouraged but not mandatory.

The language of instruction is English.

The Socio-Environmental Data Analysis and Visualization workshop continues the series of joint UN-CEU training events under the ISEPEI Project “Bridging ICTs and the Environment”. The ISEPEI Project aims to address the gap between geospatial industry and environmental practitioners by providing in-service education and professional training for environmental decision-makers and practitioners, who are in a position to greatly benefit from this data revolution to better shape management strategies and to make more informed, data-driven decisions.

ISEPEI reserves the right to cancel the course if it fails to meet the requirement of minimum enrolment. We will inform all applicants until April 28 about the confirmation or cancellation of the course.  Should the course be canceled, ISEPEI or summer school will refund 100% of the fee paid. Participants should not purchase tickets or book accommodations before the confirmation date, as the summer school or ISEPEI can only reimburse the fee but no other costs.
